    Course description

Do you enjoy working with horses? Would you like to find out more about their needs and how to manage them?

Our flexible study courses will help!

The Equestrian Skills Flexible Study Programme is designed as a two-year programme of study, the subjects studied cover a range of topics, such as basic handling, stable routine, grooming and care. This programme is an ideal starting point for horse owners and/or those wishing to work in the equine sector.

Not only is your knowledge increased, you will receive an National Certificate from the Scottish Qualifications Authority. This looks good on a stable wall!

Not only that, the programme of study is offered at a special low rate.  For those with a good knowledge of the horse, or who have successfully completed the Equestrian Skills course programme, we offer further units in Equine Studies at Higher National Certificate and then Diploma level. These units are currently available at a special low rate.

It is also possible to use an Individual Learning Account to help towards the cost. (Contact ILA Scotland 0808 100 1090).

Access is designed to be as flexible as possible, allowing for students from a wide range of backgrounds. Each equestrian centre we use has its own attendance procedure, but for most you can come along to the centre for an evening class once a week, to cover the practical aspects of the course, while you study the theory in your own time. You may also have to attend an occasional week-end at our equestrian centre in Caithness.

During the equestrian skills programme you will study the following national qualification units in:

Basic care of horses at grass

    Horse health

    Grassland production

    Watering & feeding stabled horses

    Care of the horses foot

    Horse clothing

    Stable routine

    Equitation 1 & 2

    Lungeing or longreigning

Grooming care of the stable horse

    Saddlery and harness

    Transporting the horse

Listed below are the stables/equestrian centres we use for the practical aspects of the course. contact your nearest centre for more information, when places will become available, and so on.
