Who can join?
You should hold 2 Highers, plus 3 subjects at Standard/Intermediate level (minimum Intermediate 2 English), or the equivalent, or one of the relevant NC or SVQ level 2 or 3 courses available, or the equivalent.
How do I attend?
This course is available on an evening basis in The NHC-Thurso and in The NHC-Alness, where numbers permit. You will attend two evenings per week for two years.
Many of the units counting towards this award are now available online or by open learning materials. We offer a choice of option units that allow you to select an area of study in which you are particularly interested and/or is related to your job role. We can provide you with a choice of units by using subject specialists based at one of the 6 Academic Partner Colleges of the UHI, who will deliver the unit either on-line or via open learning materials, supported by an on-line discussion board.

· Understanding Dementia
· Supporting Children & Families
· Mental Health Issues in a Care Setting
· Diet & Nutrition in Relation to Health
· Understanding Spiritual Wellbeing
· Stress Management
· Understanding Loss and the Process of Grief
· Understanding & Supporting Behaviour
· Working in Partnership with Adults who have learning difficulties
Working with Problematic Substance Use
These units count for CPD purposes for SSSC registration.
What will I study?
The wide range of units includes some on Social Care, Social Policy, Psychology, Sociology, Social Care Theory and Practice, Counselling Awareness and Diet and Nutrition.
You will also study 4 SVQ units and have the opportunity to complete the SVQ 3 Health and social Care (Adult or Children & Young People).
What could I do next?
Successful completion of the HNC provides you with the entry qualifications for a degree course such as the BA Social Science, BA Health Studies or the BA Child & Youth Studies or onto Social Work training. Employment in a variety of care settings will be available to you and allows you to satisfy some of the SSSC requirements for registration for senior staff.

Course Fees for Part Time Students
The units which count towards this qualification are available on an individual basis, making it possible for part time students to gather sufficient units to achieve the award, albeit over a longer period.
You may not have to pay any fees for these units if you qualify for a fee waiver, for instance if you are eligible for certain benefits. See the college's Fee Waiver Policy in the resources area of the website.
It is possible to use an Individual Learning Account (ILA)to pay for these units as you come to study them.
Part time students may also possible qualify for the ILA500, which is a £500 grant for students studying HNC, HND, Degree and taught Postgraduate courses. You must study units totally 40 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework (SCQF) credits or more a year.
