In the Scottish Highlands And Islands an educational revolution is taking shape. At its heart is the UHI Millennium Institute.
A partnership consisting mainly of ready established further education colleges, UHI, the prospective University Of The Highlands And Islands, is increasingly providing northern Scotland's population with access to university level courses brought to widely dispersed communities by means of the latest technologies.
Alongside these degree courses UHI's partner colleges continue to offer many vocational courses and a wide range of technical training.
This combined delivery of vocational and academic opportunities is exemplified by the transformational project which The North Highland College (itself a UHI partner), is bringing to the cathedral town of Dornoch on Sutherland's North Sea coast.
This project, costing £7 million, will consist of two key components :
- The North Highland Centre for Hospitality And Tourism
- The UHI Centre for History
The Centre For Hospitality And Tourism will be located in Dornoch's century old Burghfield House (originally a private home but more recently a hotel) now central to a six acre site which The North Highland College is starting to develop in ways which will boost the prospects of Dornoch and the wider region.
The Centre For Hospitality And Tourism (a training facility run as a fully operational hotel) will equip students with the necessary skills required to guarantee them a good start in one of the Highland's most important industries.
Adjacent to Burghfield House will be a newly erected student residence containing thirty high quality study bedrooms with en-suite facilities.
Nearby, in what was once Burghfield House's stable block, the UHI Centre For History will have its headquarters in a refurbished stone building containing a library, a videoconference equipped lecture theatre, study space, and office accommodation.
